The Chardonnay comes from the Le Vieux Pin Mercia Vineyard, south Oliver, 27yrs, organic, sandy loam with heavy gravel and stone. The Gew/Riesling comes from the same site in southern Naramata, 20yrs, organic transition, mostly alluvial and sand.
This is a small two barrel blend of the 2019’s. One Chard and one of the Gew/ Rielsing blend. Both were hard pressings, having a firmer tannic structure creates more complexity and age-ability, somewhat oxidative wine making. The Chard was a blend of 7 and 14 days skin contact, the Gew blend was 7 days on skins. Both wild and spontaneous ferments, no additions apart from minimal SO2 post malolactic. Direct press to neutral barrels, these spent 14 months on the primary lee’s, offering increased texture.
A complex nose, showing developing aromatics with baked apple marmalade, burnt orange, amber honey and subtle spiced tea. Weighted, complex, more bruised apricot and summer fruit pith, more spice, apple skin, a long finish with more prominent tannin.
Medium/Full bodied, dry
